There Is Still Power in Our Union

Here’s a fine version of a great battle hymn, done by Madison Wisconsin’s musicians’ local. Note the unabashed updating/rewording, with Billy Bragg’s line “Down with the blacklegs! All workers unite!” changed to
“Down with the governor! All workers unite!” Such a good illustration of the strength and versatility of our folk tradition.

This is what we need – solidarity, and some good fighting music! “Rise up. old Joe Hill!” indeed. “The barricades are going up!” I still HOPE that “they cannot break our will”, but the deck’s pretty well stacked against us. When was it not? If we don’t stop the bastards now, they will absolutely bury us all for generations. Scary shit, folks. We know they will never hesitate to kill us, if lies and money aren’t quite enough to stifle our voices. Give up? What the hell for? Will they be nice to us if we’re just passive? In our feeble dreams. The struggle carries on!

About l. l. frederick

I'm pretty ordinary, so I find any number of things in the world interesting, among them: books, music, flowers, food, social justice, politics and (sometimes!) people. As for my writing, I've decided that I can be subtle and tasteful when our only problems are esthetic ones. Or when I'm dead, whichever comes first. In the meantime, read at your own risk.
